Cullstack as a Photo Mechanic alternative
Photo Mechanic details from Camera Bits’ own website, October 2026.
Photo Mechanic has been the standard for fast culling for a long time, and for good reason. Cullstack does the same first job, getting through a shoot quickly and keeping the best frames, but it is built around a different idea: your photos stay where they are, on a drive, a NAS or in the cloud, and you cull them there. This page lays out the differences honestly, including where Photo Mechanic is still the better choice.

Where Cullstack is different
- Photos stay where they are. Browse a NAS, a server over SFTP, or a cloud folder and cull it in place. Nothing has to be downloaded or copied to one machine first.
- On-device AI helps, you decide. Cullstack flags closed eyes and blur, groups bursts and near-identical frames with the best one on top, and finds photos by description. It never picks the keepers for you, and no photo leaves your computer.
- One license for Mac, Windows and Linux, including Intel Macs on macOS 11 and later.
- A free tier that does not expire: browsing, the full-screen viewer, compare mode and color labels, with no account.
- Video in the same pass, with a frame-accurate scrubber (switch it on in Settings).
Where Photo Mechanic is the better fit
- Newsroom and agency work. If your day depends on code replacements, caption templates and sending images straight to an editor’s server, Photo Mechanic is built around that workflow. Cullstack has an IPTC editor, but not that pipeline.
- Ingest to two destinations at once from a card, for an instant backup while you copy.
- A long track record on deadline shoots, and many photographers already know it inside out.
Moving between them
You do not have to choose one forever. For RAW files, Cullstack writes ratings and keywords to standard XMP sidecar files, which Photo Mechanic, Lightroom and Bridge read, and it reads the sidecars they write. For JPEGs it can write them into the file itself (Settings › Files). So you can cull in one and continue in the other.
Try it on your own shoot
The best comparison is your own photos. Download Cullstack, point it at last weekend’s card or a folder on your NAS, and cull. The free tier never expires, and the 30-day trial unlocks everything, with no credit card.
